Food For Thought: The Harder I Work The Lucker I Get!!!!

BorcoBob (Bob Hass) started his racing career in 1963 with a 1955 chev. two door which was run at NHRA events in D/MP
(I will try to find pictures).

In 1966 we won the Division 5 points in Street Eliminator, set the national record (but could not back it up, LOL) and the Division 5 record. We also won our class at the only national event NHRA had at that time in Indy. We also went to the only NHRA World Finals (at that time only the division winners were invited). It was really hard as money was very TIGHT and there was no sponsor, so that's how dirt track racing came about.

I quit drag racing and sold everything and bought a dirt car (1967) which was raced the first year with a percentage driver. The second year (1968) I sold the car and bought a late model to drive myself as I thought I can do that. As it wound up I really could do it. The first year I won rookie of the year at the track I raced most at, and won enough money to pay for the car, expenses and even had extra money left to put away to start my business. Note: I think if it was not for racing I would not be where I am today.

I raced the next year (1969) with even better success. But racing back then could not get you fame and fortune. I worked every day at my regular job and every night on the race car. That November in 1969 I started my own business with a borrowed pickup for my high school football coach. Business was good the first part of 1970 but the middle of the year in was very slow so I dug out the late model in hopes that I could make a little money. It worked, as I ran two races and finished second in both. Then the business really took off and in the fall I sold the car and trailer so then I was completely out of racing.

There were a lot of ups and downs through the years, but in 1986 I bought a go-cart for my son, Rob. At that time he was eight years old. We raced carts then went to modified big wing midgets when he was 14. We raced them for two years then went to sprint cars and raced them for two years. We then went to open wheel modifieds and raced them for two years then went to Southern Series Late Models on asphalt. The traveling was too much so after one year we went back to open wheel modifieds. We did not do to much racing as the business was growing and taking up a lot of my time.

In 2001 I semi-retired and Rob took over the day-to-day running of the business. Rob was so busy all the time he did not have time to race so he retired from driving. I loved the sport so much that I hired drivers and, by the way, went through a lot of them. It was not the same as I did not enjoy it at all. So that's why I went to drag racing where I could drive myself. At this time I am REALLY happy with the decision. The computers, burn-outs and the lanching of the car is awsome. You have to really concentrate. I have learned to be patient (which in not my strong suit). So the story continues.
